Nico Rizzo, 8, of Boyertown, was on a float with his football team in the Boyertown Halloween Parade on Saturday, Oct. 19, a GoFundMe campaign started by Abby Mackey, his friend's mother, states.
"As Nico went to step back onto the trailer, his foot slipped and got caught under the wheel," Mackey said on the campaign page. "He quickly became trapped under the wheels of his float's trailer."
Members of the community rushed to Nico's aid and managed to get him immediate care after he was injured, the campaign page states. He was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital where he's waiting for surgery to repair a broken femur.
"While we hope that this will be the extent of his injuries, it is a major recovery period for both him and his family aside from the trauma he has already endured," Mackey said on the campaign page.
"On behalf of the Boyertown Historical Society & Boyertown Halloween Committee we want to extend our well wishes to Nico and his family," the parade association said on its Facebook page on Tuesday, Oct. 22. "We hope for a smooth and speedy recovery!"
Several other community members replied to the post sending prayers.
The money raised from the GoFundMe campaign will be used to help offset Nico's medical expenses, time off from work for his parents, and any other costs the family may incur so they can focus on his recovery, the campaign states.
The campaign has raised $27,095 of its $30,000 goal as of Tuesday, Oct. 29.
